Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel – Hover Fun in the Void!
When I first saw Borderlands – rather late, almost a year after its first release – I was a bit reserved. I’ve played some Gearbox titles before, and not all of them were great, plus the game looks a bit cartoonish, with its hard traced contours and funny acting robots. This has all passed soon after I started playing – actually it has become one of my all time favorites in time, which I have played through a number of times. I was happy to see the sequel two years ago, and very excited (and increasingly impatient) when I heard about the third game of the series: the Pre-Sequel. To be honest, I didn’t think it was possible to add more fun to this great game, but I was wrong – Gearbox Australia did a great job. Here are the things in the new game I enjoy the most.
- Jetpacks!
One of the greatest new things introduced in the new Borderlands title is the new vacuum combat. The details, oh, the details always make me glad: guns sound different in the vacuum of Pandora’s moon Elpis, the ammo and the money flies off when you open a crate, and dealing critical hits to the enemies by hitting their O2 kits… makes it great. But the best part in the vacuum combat is that players can use some of their precious oxygen to jump higher in the low gravity environment of Elpis – makes it feel like you are wearing a jetpack. A great addition to the game’s feeling and loads of fun!
- Hover moon buggies!
I have always enjoyed driving around Pandora in the futuristic, heavily armed vehicles available for “lease” from the stations. On Elpis, though, a new vehicle is added to the game – a hover buggy! This handy little thingy, armed with lasers and rockets, lets you hover above the surface of the moon (although also over stacks of cash and ammo, so you have to push down to pick them up) and hoverjump over lava lakes and ravines at your discretion. A great new means of transport, and a huge source of fun.
- Lasers!
If there is one thing I missed in the previous two Borderlands titles – being all futuristic and sh… stuff – was ray guns. The pre-sequel has finally made my dream come true – now I can use various lasers and other ray guns (including freeze rays) to slaughter my enemies in the game. Borderlands was already the game with one of the largest variety of choosable weapons I have seen, and the addition of ray guns and lasers just made it even more fun to play.
All the above, plus the signature humor of the game, makes Borderlands – The Pre-Sequel one of my favorites. But, mind you, it’s not all about fun – there are missions rather challenging that need to be completed!
