Whilst many traditional games and pastimes have been left languishing behind – in a generation where we are obsessed with technology – the game of poker has held its own. Poker has come a long way since its humble origins some 200 years ago, as highlighted by this timeline. As the world around it has progressed, the game has evolved with it, becoming more popular and successful than ever before.
Playing poker live will always be the pinnacle of the sport. You can really immerse yourself in the game, take in your surroundings and get into the mind of your opponents. However, our hectic lifestyles or a lack of local poker playing opportunities doesn’t always make that possible. So it’s little wonder why online poker has become such a huge hit around the world.
In the late 90’s, the first website dedicated to playing poker online was launched. Today, there are too many to count, all with thousands of members paying to play one of the world’s oldest and most traditional games.
Virtual reality technology is improving at a rapid rate and will soon be integrated into some of the world’s most famous games and consoles. This opens up another technological door for poker to walk though and the game is already taking its first tentative steps towards the ultimate online poker experience.
Reviewed Casinos reported last month, that practical experiments were taking place to marry online poker with Virtual Reality technology. Those experiments were streamed live via Twitch and Bolt Casino VR and the video below gives a great insight into how Virtual Reality can impact the game of poker.
A more in-depth article on the subject was posted by VRHeadsets3D where they discuss the exciting possibilities of combining Virtual and Augmented Reality with online poker. Perhaps after the success of Pokemon GO, some developers are focusing on AR, “meaning players would stay in their own environments with game features appearing before them.”
However, it is VR that perhaps holds the most exciting prospects for the future of the game, providing the possibility to play an iconic game in a virtual world of the most iconic locations. Think the top of Mount Everest, a 1920’s jazz bar or in the Sahara Desert! Whilst the technology has been around for a while now, it has by no means reached it’s full potential so as developers gain more confidence in this field, there’s no reason why VR couldn’t be the next major development in the poker timeline.
