Is the homework important? Homework is important for reasons that are obvious and not so obvious. Unfortunately, most people – lecturers – do not see beyond the obvious. The obvious, immediate goal of assigning homework to a student is to provide him (or her) with the opportunity to practice and reinforce his academic skills. By dedicating adequate time to the task, the student has a better chance of getting good grades. True? Clear! Of course we can’t ignore what is called homework service which plays an important role in certain conditions. One of these particular conditions is when a student is required to do a difficult homework while he must prepare himself as best as possible to face an exam the next day.
However, the task is important for other reasons. It can and should be an experience that forms a character, a stone that is stepped towards liberation. If lecturers who appreciate their “hidden values,” handle it appropriately, the task can help a student provide himself with some very essential emotional and behavioral skills, which he will eventually need to overcome. The skills in question include responsibility, autonomy, time management, ingenuity and the last one; the self-esteem!
Let’s look in detail at each of these four attributes; the four hidden values of the task, starting with …
Responsibility: Is the ability to assume property of what rightfully belongs to us, to respond to obligations. (Not so that we hesitate to pick up the ball when it falls on our court). Homework is a responsibility that by right belongs to the students, not the others. When they are very involved, they start the process towards the problem. Lessons are made, but the real lesson is not learned.
Autonomy: Governing yourself is standing on your own feet. Homework is the first occasion when someone, who is a lecturer, assigns homework to the students. In this sense, the task breaks into a new terrain. Now the students are responsible outside their family or friendship circle. The way in which this opportunity is handled will increase or obstruct the students’ gradual independence.
Time management: The ability to organize time in an effective, productive way, to complete homework on time without neglecting quality. In this regard, most lecturers tell the students when they begin the task, but not when they should finish it. This sets the stage for a nighttime task marathon. The students, instead of learning to manage time, learn to waste it.
Ingenuity: Is the ability to find, invent or adapt creative means to solve problems. This is the key, the core part of the human being, is not that true? The task (although it is not the only way) provides the form and the students the essence. That is, assuming that everyone saw the qualifications before.
And what can be added to those four hidden values? For self-esteem, of course! Therefore, the task offers the students the opportunity to develop a positive self-value, the fifth, and most important, the last hidden value of the task. This is what closes the previous values.
The way in which their neighborhood solves, manages, and controls the subject of the task, will establish certain antecedents that will have a great impact in terms of the students’ response to future challenges, in the response of future problems. , and, above all, in the way they develop the skills they will need to shape and enjoy a successful adult age. By understanding the hidden values above, each student can be motivated by himself/herself to do his/her homework.
